Jazz on the Avenue is a refreshing Friday after-hours gathering for the entire family from 6 - 10 p.m. in the Grand Casino Ballroom on the fourth floor of the Walker Building. The evening’s atmosphere is filled with jazzy sounds and lots of southern style food. Admission is $10 and an additional $10 for the buffet.
2/26/2010 - The Spirit of the Baobab Tree School Matinee
"The Spirit of the Baobab Tree" is an original folktale that tells the story of a young inner-city boy who finds a connection to his past through the mysterious African tree that he draws. The story, which celebrates African-American history, will be performed by the students of Gary, Indiana-based DancExcel – Champion Center for Creative Arts Education. This special matinee performance is said to be "a field trip experience students will never forget!" Admission is $5 per student and schools are required to provide transportation to and from the Madame Walker Theatre. Please call 317.236.2099 to make reservations.
2/26/2010 - Master Class/Workshop: The Spirit of the Baobab Tr
The Gary, Indiana-based nonprofit Children into Champions, with support from the Madame Walker Theatre Center, will present a dancers' Master Class on Friday, Feb. 26 from 3:30 - 5 p.m., in the historic Madame Walker Theatre. The class is designed to help students understand the many messages of "The Spirit of the Baobab Tree," a Black History Month production at the theatre on Thursday, Feb. 25 and Friday, Feb. 26. Admission to the class is $10 and $5 for students who attend the Friday matinee performance. Teachers who participate in the Master Class will receive a copy of the curriculum guide, a supplement to both the production and the illustrated children’s storybook.
